Q: The moment the weather gets cold, I get static and hat hair. How can I avoid this?

Static is typically caused by dryness, so avoid styling products with a heavy alcohol content. After showering, blot—don’t rub—your hair, since rubbing causes friction, which can increase flyways, frizz, and static. Use a deep-conditioning mask once a week, and to avoid static on a daily basis, try a brush with a combination of natural and boar’s-hair bristles, such as a Mason Pearson. These bristles allow for a close grip, which encourages the cuticle to lie flatter and, thus, reduces static. If you still find yourself with static, rub a dryer sheet, such as Bounce, over your hair to eliminate the problem.

The biggest key to avoiding hat hair is investing in the right type of hat. Try a looser style with a fuller top, such as a bucket hat or newsboy cap, which will allow you to better retain your style. Before putting on your hat, you can also comb hair in the opposite direction that it naturally falls. That way, once you remove your hat, there will still be some bounce and volume. If you still have hat-hair troubles, use a vent brush to lift strands and remove any tangles.
