Q: How can I keep my makeup from melting in the summer? To keep melting makeup at bay, begin by focusing on your skin care. Follow a simple three-step regimen—cleanse, moisturize, exfoliate (don’t OD on the moisturizer or skip the nighttime cleansing, ladies)—and make sure you’re using the best products for your skin type. To determine whether your products are right for you, examine the way your skin looks and feels: Is it dry or oily? Or is it bright, clear, and somewhat translucent? If it’s the latter, then you’re on the right track to creating a good “canvas.” When it comes to actually applying your makeup, you’ll want to use a lighter hand in the summertime—after all, the heavier the makeup, the more it will tend to travel. I don't generally recommend primers, but there are a few waterproof and sweatproof products I stand by. If you’re opting for a dramatic eye, check out Benefit She-Laq, a product you can use around your eyes without worry. I also recommend Stila Smudge Pots, M.A.C. Paints (worn by themselves or under other shadows), and Revlon ColorStay Overtime Lash Tint mascara (if this doesn't say on, nothing will). Of course, no one wants to wear heaps of powder during the summer, but powder can still be great for absorbing oil and keeping makeup in place. Fortunately, there are a few lighter formulas that don’t cost too much. There are also a few dual-active foundations that give good coverage and create a matte finish without looking too heavy. If you’re lucky enough to have good skin though, you might want to simply go with a tinted moisturizer (Estée Lauder makes a good one), or just a touch of concealer, a little blush, and a dab of lip gloss or tinted lip conditioner. Summer beauty is all about great-looking skin anyway! With a degree from the London School of Beauty and Make-up and a variety of M.A.C. courses to her credit, Melanie Melanie has been serving clients in the Seattle area for more than a decade. Her résumé includes fashion, TV, theater, film, special effects, bridal, and print work. |
