Q: I have thin, fine hair that tends to fall flat in humid weather. Can you give me some advice? The first key to building volume is getting the right cut. A shorter, layered cut will give your hair more body than a long, single-length cut. In addition, softly feathering the hair close to your face will add texture and volume. You can also create the illusion of movement and body with a skillful balance of highlights and lowlights. Just be sure to find a great colorist who can choose the right shades to flatter your skin tone and compliment your cut. To give your strands extra oomph, you’ll want to use a thickening shampoo and conditioner (Bumble and Bumble’s are great for getting big Barbarella tresses). To avoid damage, keep heat-styling to a minimum, and use hair powders to keep your hair looking fresh between washes. When you do blow-dry, spritz a volumizing spray, such as Kiehl’s Super Thick Volumizer, onto your roots. Then flip your head upside down, set your blow-dryer on the lowest speed, and aim the nozzle at your roots. During the process, use your hands to move sections of the hair from side to side. Once your hair is nearly dry, finish with round brush for a sexy, voluminous look that lasts all day.
