Q: I never know what to do with my hair in the summer. Can you give me some ideas?

The first key to hot-weather hair is keeping it out of your face. Tucking it back and pulling it up will keep you hair where you want it and allow it to absorb moisture while it’s being held and styled. One of my favorite styles for summer is something I call the Old Faithful—the half-pony, so your hair is down but not in your face. To get the look, pull back the front and side parts, leaving only the back layer hanging down, then pull out some pieces from sides for a softer, looser look. To add a little wave, finger-curl pieces in the back, or spice it up with a glamorous accessory.

Then, of course, there’s always the full-on pony—a classic look that never goes out of style. After you pull your hair up (I recommend using a Bungee elastic), wrap some strands around the elastic, and affix them with a bobby pin. Or try another summertime option: the chopstick style. Start with damp hair, and comb through a designing lotion, like Nexxus VersaStyler, to add texture and hold. Pull your hair back as if you were doing a ponytail, but then twist it in an upward direction, as if you were going for a French twist, and weave the chopsticks through—one in one direction, the second in the other direction.

And finally, who wants to waste time fighting with the blow-dryer when the weather’s nice? Instead, start embracing your hair’s natural texture. To get a great-looking wash-and-go style, use products designed specifically for your hair type. Some of my favorites include Nexxus Curl Energee, which defines curls and tames frizz, and Nexxus Diametress Thickening Shampoo, which is perfect for fine or thin hair because it bulks up the diameter of the hair shaft. In addition, remember that the sun is damaging not only to your skin but also to your hair, so look for products that have UVA/UVB protectors. Don’t forget that you can always take cover by pulling all your hair up into a hat. Whether it’s a floppy-rimmed, cowboy straw, or a preppy striped version, it’s sure to keep you looking chic while you’re running around and doing your summer shopping!
